Newcastle United are believed to be keen on signing Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo – but it could take £50million to make a deal happen.
Newcastle’s link with Arthur emerged in Italy
Last week, Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that Newcastle want to sign Arthur in January.
Spanish side Sevilla are also keen, with Juventus potentially ready to cut ties with Arthur.
Arthur was late for training one day last week, meaning boss Max Allegri banished him from the trip to Venezia.
With just one league start to his name this season, the writing appears to be on the wall for Arthur at Juventus.
Newcastle now hope the Brazilian will join them in January, but it won’t come cheap…
Newcastle face £50million outlay for Juventus misfit
The Times report that Arthur is surplus to requirements but would still cost Newcastle at least £50million.
Juventus paid £66million to sign Arthur from Barcelona in 2020 and want to recoup a large chunk of that outlay.
This would be a club-record transfer for Newcastle, eclipsing the signing of Joelinton back in 2019.
With Newcastle in a relegation battle, it seems unlikely that they would be able to attract a player like Arthur in January.
PIF may well be able to afford the £50million, but tempting Arthur is another matter – and Newcastle may find a deal difficult until they take steps forward.
