Newcastle United are looking for a replacement for Rafael Benitez, and Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is said to be on their wishlist.

Steven Gerrard looks on before the UEFA Champions League Final between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on June 01, 2019 in Madrid, Spain.

If Steven Gerrard does show up at Newcastle United, it may just be enough to save Jonjo Shelvey’s career at St. James’ Park.

Rangers boss Gerrard is a huge fan of Newcastle midfielder Shelvey, who had looked in line to leave this summer.

It was thought that Rafael Benitez was getting ready to offload Shelvey, with Newcastle looking at other options, as reported by the Northern Echo.

However, Benitez failed to agree terms with Newcastle and the Magpies are now looking for his successor.

The Northern Echo claim that Gerrard is now on Newcastle’s wishlist, and the North East side are ‘confident’ that they can get him to leave Rangers.

That may well be music to Shelvey’s ears, as Gerrard is on record as being a big fan of his.

“I thought they missed Shelvey – he’s the one player in the Newcastle squad who has the ability to open the door and put a great through pass in on goal,” Gerrard said back in 2018 to the Chronicle, after Newcastle lost 2-0 to Liverpool.

Jonjo Shelvey arrives for the Premier League Match between Newcastle United and Leicester City at St.James' Park on September 29, 2018, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Gerrard did, of course, play with Shelvey at Liverpool earlier in their respective careers, and knows the Newcastle man’s strengths better than most.

And Shelvey may well be hoping Gerrard does get the job, as it would give him a chance of saving his career with the Magpies.
