Newcastle have also just sold Ayoze Perez, which leaves their attacking options looking short ahead of next term.
The Magpies players are now back in pre-season training, with Ben Dawson and Neil Redfearn in temporary charge.
And the images coming out of Newcastle training have not gone down well.
Goalkeeper Darlow was spotted playing out on pitch in a practice match yesterday, and Newcastle supporters were far from happy about the image.
Darlow’s appearance on pitch was actually unlikely to have been down to a lack of players.
Newcastle have plenty of fringe players who have returned from loan spells to join up with training again, like Rolando Aarons, Henri Saivet, Dwight Gayle and Achraf Lazaar.
But that does not change the fact that it is a concerning time for Newcastle supporters, with their squad looking short on quality and with Benitez leaving.
