Nahitan Nandez is on the verge of a move to Serie A side Cagliari, report Gianluca Di Marzio.

Nandez, 23, had been linked with a switch to England earlier this year.

Negotiations between Boca Juniors and Cagliari for the Uruguay international are close to ‘final agreement’.

Cagliari will pay around £15 million for Nandez, which is a large reason why his move to England has not progressed.

Newcastle United were said by Calciomercato in March to have revisited their interest in Nandez, having previously been keen on him a year ago.

The same month Tuttomercatoweb reported Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United were keen on the midfielder, who featured at last summer’s World Cup.

Leeds’ failure to win promotion effectively ended their chances of a deal, considering the funds involved.

Newcastle losing Rafa Benitez and replacing him with Steve Bruce has seen their focus in the transfer market fade, with no players signed.

It’s a shame for Newcastle, because Nandez is a player with real quality who could have improved their starting line up, and was available. An opportunity missed.
