Newcastle United have signed Amadou Diallo following his release from West Ham United with Steve Harper excited to get the deal sorted.

Diallo was released by West Ham at the end of last season with the Hammers deciding to let him go after bringing him up through their ranks.

Diallo spent time on trial at Chelsea over the summer but didn’t do enough to win a contract from the Blues.

The teenager then linked up with Newcastle as a trialist, featuring against Middlesbrough on September 30th.

News on Diallo has been thin on the ground over the last two weeks but Newcastle have now confirmed the winger’s signature.

Newcastle have announced that Diallo has sign a deal until the end of the season and will feature in the club’s Under-21 side.

Magpies academy director Steve Harper has now offered his view on the Diallo signing having played a key role in getting the deal done.

Harper has told Newcastle’s official website that the Magpies are delighted to have secured Diallo having been impressed with him on trial.

Harper believes Diallo now adds depth out wide for Newcastle’s Under-21’s but couldn’t offer promises about a long-term future or first-team role in the future.

“We are delighted that Amadou is joining us until the end of the season,” said Harper. “He has performed well over his extended trial period and his signing gives us increased options in wide areas in the under-21 group,” he added.

The 19-year-old predominantly plays as a left winger and will now be hoping to prove West Ham wrong for letting him go.

A former England Under-17 international with three goals in seven caps, Diallo was branded as ‘electric’ on West Ham’s official website.

That was back in 2018 and Diallo was just never really able to kick on and push towards the first team like Declan Rice and Ben Johnson in years gone by.

Others have left the West Ham ranks and gone on to succeed elsewhere, including Burnley midfielder and Josh Cullen, West Brom winger Grady Diangana and now Aji Alese at Sunderland.

Diallo will be hoping to follow in their footsteps with Newcastle and his focus will now be on impressing enough to win a contract extension in 2023.
