Newcastle United target Alex Grimaldo has decided to leave Benfica on a free transfer this summer but the Magpies will face competition.
That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that Grimaldo will not be extending his contract with the Portuguese club.
Interest in Grimaldo is already building as clubs line up to potentially land an absolute bargain.
It’s stated that talks have been held with both Fulham and Nottingham Forest ahead of Grimaldo becoming a free agent.
Nice have made an ‘appealing financial offer’ whilst Real Sociedad, Valencia, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are also thought to be in the mix for the Spaniard.
Grimaldo won’t be making any decisions on a new club just yet but it’s clear that the former Barcelona man won’t be short of options – and Newcastle may face a real battle.

Newcastle United in the race for Alex Grimaldo
This report comes just after Newcastle were linked with a move of their own for Grimaldo.
Spanish newspaper AS claimed last week that Newcastle have made an approach to Grimaldo’s representatives over a potential deal.
It seems pretty clear at this point that Newcastle will move for a new left back this summer.
The Northern Echo reported last week that Newcastle have made Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney their top target this summer.
Arsenal will likely demand a decent price for Tierney though, possible around £30million, and Grimaldo can be signed for free.
The Spaniard will be a very appealing option for that reason and his stats have been impressive.
Grimaldo had bagged five goals and 13 assists in all competitions this season, proving his ability as an attacking left back.
Tierney doesn’t quite offer that same threat but if Newcastle want the Spaniard, they’re going to have to beat a number of clubs to his signature.
