Leeds United’s hopes of finishing in the top six of the Championship this season have suffered a blow.
The West Yorkshire outfit have played out a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United away from home at St. James’ Park.
Jamaal Lascelles’s goal midway through the second half put the Magpies in the lead, but New Zealand international striker Chris Wood equalised for the visiting team in injury time.
The draw means that Leeds are now fourth in the Championship table with 73 points from 42 matches, three points above seventh-placed Fulham.
Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan was following the match, and he told BBC Sport: “Leeds will know they have been absolutely outplayed in that half – but they stayed in the game. Do that, and they always have a chance of getting something out of games.
“That was the one chance that they had – it was Chris Wood’s first and only chance of the game. It was a clinical finish and it came from the right player. Chris Wood to the rescue, again.”
Leeds co-owner Andrea Radrizzani has taken to social networking site Twitter to give his reaction to the final result.
Over the course of the 90 minutes at St. James’ Park on Friday evening, hosts Newcastle had 56% of the possession, took 22 shots of which four were on target, and earned 19 corners, according to BBC Sport.
Visitors Leeds had 44% of the possession, took four shots of which two were on target, and failed to earn a corner, according to BBC Sport.
