The Strasbourg goalkeeper had a largely unsuccessful spell with the Magpies between 2016 and 2018.

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels has given an interview with a Belgian outlet in which he criticised his former club, saying players were “mostly looking out for themselves” and suggested the atmosphere wasn’t friendly.
The 26-year-old shot-stopper was Rafael Benitez’s first signing at St James’ Park back in the summer of 2016, joining from Belgian club KAA Gent, and was initially his first-choice goalkeeper.
However, Sels ended up losing his place in the side following a high-profile error away to Aston Villa and went on to make just five further appearances for the club, with Karl Darlow playing the majority of games.
Last season, the keeper was sent out on loan to Anderlecht and, in July last year, completed a permanent move to Strasbourg, his final Newcastle appearance tally standing at just 14 senior appearances, plus four in the Under-23s (Transfermarkt).
Reflecting on his time on Tyneside following his switch from Gent, Sels told Sport/Foot: “The change was tough. I went from a group of friends to a dressing room where players were mostly looking out for themselves. At Anderlecht too, it was each to their own in a way. My teammates there were more like colleagues than anything else.”
Following Sels’s comments, some Toon Army faithful took to Twitter to issue their own criticisms of the player:
