The BBC pundit and Arsenal icon said the Magpies trio of Federico Fernandez, Martin Dubravka and Rafael Benitez did well in the 1-1 Premier League draw.
Three Newcastle United individuals have been singled out for praise by BBC pundit and Arsenal legend Martin Keown.
The Magpies held a swashbuckling Everton side at bay in Wednesday’s Premier League game at Goodison Park and left with a point.
Rafael Benitez’s side withstood 19 efforts from their opponents during the match – as shown by the Sky Sports match stats – and even took the lead through Salomon Rondon on 19 minutes.
The Toffees did equalise through Richarlison and weighed in with further gilt-edged opportunities from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Cenk Tosun.
Christian Atsu had two late opportunities to claim all three points for the visitors but in the end the final score was 1-1.
Newcastle were expertly set up to soak up pressure from the opposition and breaking on the counterattack, which very nearly yielded three points.
Following the end of the game, Keown – a three-time Premier League winner with the Gunners in 1998, 2002 and 2004 (Transfermarkt) – gave his thoughts on what he had seen.
The 52-year-old was pleased with the displays of defender Federico Fernandez and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, as well as hailing manager Benitez.
Keown told Match of the Day (05/12, 22:45): “They defended fantastically well. Fernandez there – what a block that is by the way – getting everything in the way.
“Dubravka there, look at that for a save, he was on it today. Benitez, he has my admiration, he’s an outstanding manager.”
