Newcastle tried to convince Andros Townsend to join Crystal Palace on loan.
Andros Townsend celebrates after scoring the first goal for Newcastle
Andros Townsend has clinched his move from Newcastle United to Crystal Palace, ensuring an instant return to the Premier League.
The deal was announced via Palace’s official club website, after they activated a release clause to sign him for £13 million.
Townsend signed for Newcastle from Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window, and was one of their best players in the final months of the season.
His form was not enough to convince him to stay at the club, despite Newcastle’s best efforts.
The Times report Newcastle made a late plea to try and convince him to remain on their books, by attempting to persuade Townsend to join Crystal Palace on a season long loan instead.

While this would have meant there would be no fee, the hope was that Newcastle will win promotion this season without him, and once back in the Premier League, they could convince him to stay put.
This evidently was not a proposal which was attractive to Townsend, who elected to leave on a permanent basis.
At least this way Newcastle know where they stand and can move on, which they have done so already, securing the signing of Matt Ritchie from Bournemouth.
