Media Foot report that Newcastle United saw a £31million bid rejected to sign Borussia Monchengladbach star Kouadio Kone last summer – and it is unclear if Newcastle will try to reignite their interest over the next few weeks.
Gladbach bought 21-year-old Kone in January 2021 from Toulouse after he had broken into the French side’s first XI. He was loaned back to Toulouse for the first six months of his two-year spell at Gladbach, before his time in Germany.
Since then, he has started to grow in terms of importance at Gladbach. Only 29 appearances came his way in his first season, but this time around, he is proving more important. He has started 15 of Gladbach’s 17 league and cup games.
The two he missed – suspended and through injury. Little surprise, the six-time France Under-21 star is attracting clubs. Newcastle made a £31million bid which was been rejected. The Toon are keen on a holding midfielder this month.

Newcastle really need a holding midfielder. Jonjo Shelvey is sidelined and Bruno Guimaraes is currently being used in that role. But the Brazil ace is better as a box-to-box midfielder, ahead of a no.4. Kone would give him that license.
At this stage in his career, Kone is seen as a player with huge potential. A future France international. But if he is to stay on track, then he needs to keep playing regular first-team football. Taking time to adapt, Kone would surely start.
At Gladbach, he is playing week in, week out. So, he might be better off staying put. But while Newcastle are using Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock ahead of Guimaraes, there is room for improvement and Kone certainly is that.
