Newcastle United reportedly have Nico Williams on their transfer list ahead of the summer window, with Arsenal also believed to be interested in signing the Athletic Club superstar.

According to the Athletic, the Toon considered a move for the Spanish international in January before moving for Everton’s Antony Gordon, though with Newcastle keen to sign another attacker in the summer, Williams could reemerge as a target.

Newcastle are hardly alone in their interest of Williams, though, with CalcioMercato reporting that Arsenal are also keen on signing the Athletic superstar, with is believed to have a release clause of just €50m (£42m), a tantalising fee given how good the attacker has been this season.

Lauded as ‘electric’ by Total Football Analysis, Williams was a surprise inclusion in Spain’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad, with the 20-year-old scoring four goals and bagging four assists in La Liga for the Bilbao-based side. And as a result, interest is spiking for the attacker.

Indeed, with Newcastle clearly looking for a young attacker to add to their growing squad in the summer, Williams could be an exception signing for the club, with the Basque-born talent one of the most exciting forwards in Europe and a player who can grow a lot under Eddie Howe.

Moreover, with a set release clause of just £42m, Newcastle could secure a deal for the attacker rather quickly, especially if the likes of Arsenal are slow out of the gates to move for Williams, who could be keen to move to the Premier League this summer.

Newcastle have been very smart in their transfer dealings since PIF’s takeover in 2021, yet a good case could be made that signing Williams would be the most exciting transfer the club have made since the new ownership has come in.

At 20, Williams is one of the most exciting talents in Europe and a player many of the Premier League’s biggest sides are keen to sign. And if the Magpies are willing to match the attacker’s release clause, the youngster could be one of the best moves Newcastle have made so far under the PIF regime.
