French outlet Jeunes Footeux claim that Newcastle United are interested in signing RC Lens defender Kevin Danso and the Austria international could cost as much as £35million – after spending the 19-20 season on loan at Southampton.

Danso, 24, has clocked up 54 appearances for Lens since joining the club in the summer of 2021. Impressing for the Ligue 1 side, he has won 11 caps with Austria. He has a contract at Lens until June 2026 – but Newcastle are keen.

Danso’s career has gone a level up after spending the 2019-20 season on loan at Southampton. A spell in which he managed just 10 games for the Saints. But at Lens, he is going from strength to strength in France – starring for Lens.

Newcastle are known for using French football as a scouting pool. Recently, luring Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman to the Toon from Lyon and Lille. They could return with a move for Danso – but it will not be a cheap deal to sign him.

Newcastle interested in signing RC Lens defender Danso, could cost £35m

Newcastle are well stocked in the middle of their defence. Botman and Fabian Schar have conjured up a brilliant partnership in the Premier League. Dan Burn can play in the middle, but has been used at left-back this season.

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles is the other option, currently warming the bench for Eddie Howe’s side. So, the Toon could do with a younger option with Burn being used on the left. But it is hardly an area that requires urgent surgery.

Is Danso worth as much as £35m? That is the question. Especially, given he struggled last time out in the Premier League. But, Newcastle’s scouts have proven effective so far, certainly, in France. A good signing if the price is right.

His last Ligue 1 outing will have certainly caught the eye of those watching on at Newcastle. A stunning 3-1 win over PSG, stopping the likes of Kylian Mbappe from scoring. Lens currently sit second behind PSG in the top tier.
