Newcastle United reportedly remain interested in signing Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech, with Tottenham also in the race for the Moroccan international this January.

According to the Telegraph, the 29-year-old playmaker is one of three Chelsea players Newcastle are interested in signing this month, though as per Algemeen Dagblad, Tottenham have been keeping tabs on Ziyech for quite some time, with a move potentially on the cards in the coming weeks.

Ziyech was one of the stars of the 2022 FIFA World Cup as Morocco made history by becoming the first African and Arab nation to make it to the semi-finals of the competition. However, the former Ajax superstar’s fortunes at club level continue to be dismal.

Signed for a reported £33m in 2020 according to Sky Sports News, Ziyech has never looked at home with Chelsea as the winger has failed to nail down a starting XI spot under any of the Blues last three managers, including current boss Graham Potter.

And now, Newcastle are looking to save Ziyech from his Chelsea nightmare, with the Magpies seemingly keen on beating the likes fo Tottenham to the attacker’s signature, a move that will be seen by many as quite the statement from the Toon.

Lauded as ‘incredible’ by Morocco boss Walid Regragui, a change of scenery could be all it takes for Ziyech to return to his former self. And given how impressive Newcastle have been in implementing new signings under Eddie Howe, a transfer to St. James Park could be perfect for the winger.

Newcastle have been unusually quiet this January with the Magpies yet to open their unlimited wallet to spend big on a name that could greatly improve their squad this window. However, this could soon change in regards to Ziyech, with the winger an ideal signing for the Toon.

Moreover, Chelsea’s huge squad means that the Blues could be open to selling Ziyech this month, with the attacker himself likely eager to challenge himself at a new club as well as find a home where he can finally play his best football after three disappointing seasons in west London.
