Newcastle transfer news: ‘Theatrical’ star makes decision on Prem switch

Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is willing to snub a transfer to Leicester City in January. The Slovakia international has now vowed to fight for a role under Eddie Howe.

That is according to Chronicle Live, which reports the Foxes are showing an interest in the 33-year-old. Brendan Rodgers appreciates what Dubravka can offer him at the King Power Stadium after seeing his East Midlands outfit produce an underwhelming campaign so far.

Fulham dealt Leicester their 11th defeat in 18 Premier League matches this Tuesday with a 1-0 result on the road. The Foxes have now lost their past three fixtures and have only won five games all season. Rodgers has also seen his side concede 31 goals to just 26 scored.

Dubravka now asking to cancel his loan transfer with Manchester United gave Leicester an opening to sign the Newcastle star. He had moved to Old Trafford on a season-long deal in September for £2m. The Red Devils also secured a £6m option to keep the 30-cap stopper.

But Erik ten Hag only played Dubravka twice with both appearances coming in the Carabao Cup. Gary Neville also described his final outing against Burnley as ‘theatrical’. Newcastle then agreed to cancel the temporary transfer on New Year’s Day and recalled Dubravka.

Howe was happy to welcome Dubravka back to St James’ Park to add cover for Nick Pope. The Toon’s £12m summer signing from Burnley immediately replaced the Slovakian as the No1 on Tyneside upon his arrival. Karl Darlow and Loris Karius have since been his backup.

Dubravka also made the Newcastle bench at Arsenal on Tuesday night. He had only made a Premier League squad four times while with Manchester United. Ten Hag overlooked the experienced shot-stopper for each of the Red Devils’ top-flight games after the World Cup.

Now, Dubravka is ready to reject another transfer this January amid Leicester’s interest to fight for his place at Newcastle. A telling indication of Howe’s plans for the goalkeeper may come on Saturday when the Magpies visit Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup third round.
