The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has reported on Twitter that Southampton and Forest have missed out on a deal to sign Newcastle stopper Karl Darlow – with the Toon stopper likely to join Hull after Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup clash.

Darlow, 32, only been used once by Newcastle this term. But, it was his 100th outing for the club. He joined the club back in the summer of 2014, before returning to Forest on loan for 2014-15. Forest had shown interest in a move.

Now, the £30k-a-week star is set to leave Newcastle after first signing on the dotted line more than eight years ago. But, not until Newcastle have finished their tie against Southampton in the Carabao Cup. He will move to Hull City.

Hope says Forest and the Saints want him, maybe as cover for Dean Henderson and Gavin Bazunu. But second-tier side Hull are likely to offer Darlow more football in the second half of the season. A loan will be finalised for Darlow.

Southampton and Forest miss out on Newcastle goalkeeper Darlow

Darlow really needed to leave Newcastle this month. Martin Dubravka has returned to Newcastle after a frustrating loan spell at Manchester United. He has not been moved on and is now seemingly happy to be the Toon’s no.2.

Nick Pope has been the goalkeeper of the season in the Premier League, while Loris Karius has signed a new deal on Tyneside. Darlow has fallen down the pecking order to fourth choice under manager Eddie Howe at The Toon.

So, after tonight’s Cup clash, Darlow will leave the Toon on loan. It is believed he will join Hull who sit in a solid 15th place but have looked to sign players to keep them above the drop zone. They are only eight points above 21st.

Had Darlow returned to Nottingham Forest, he would have been the third Toon player to move to Forest after Chris Wood and Jonjo Shelvey – with the latter’s announcement expected sooner rather than later.
