Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Goncalo Inacio, a defender Liverpool are looking to bring in as a potential long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk.
Newcastle scout Liverpool target Goncalo Inacio
According to Record, Newcastle want to sign Inacio from Sporting Lisbon in the summer transfer window.
The Premier League club reportedly sent a scout to watch the 21-year-old central defender in action for Sporting against Juventus in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening.
Newcastle have been following the youngster for a while now and have him on the shortlist of targets for the summer of 2023.
The Magpies’ interest in Inacio will come as a blow for Liverpool, who have also been linked with the Sporting star.
Goal reported in March 2023 that Liverpool have been scouting Inacio.
The former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners are reportedly looking at the Portugal international centre-back as a potential long-term replacement for Netherlands international defender Virgil van Dijk.

HITC Verdict: Summer transfer battle
In our view, Newcastle United will not find it easy to sign Goncalo Inacio in the summer transfer window, given that Liverpool are keen on the youngster as well.
Yes, Newcastle are a big club in the Premier League and could end up in the UEFA Champions League next season, but Liverpool are bigger and regularly compete for major trophies.
The Reds could spend big in the summer of 2023, and the chance to play for the former Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners could be very appealing to Inacio.
