Newcastle United could reportedly make a move to sign Chelsea star and rumoured Liverpool target Mason Mount if the England international becomes available in the summer.
According to journalist Dean Jones, the Magpies are keeping an eye on Mount’s situation at Chelsea as contract talks continue to stall for the 24-year-old, with transfer interest rapidly building for the Premier League playmaker amid stalls in discussions.
The Daily Mail recently reported that Liverpool are pushing hard to sign Mount in what could soon become one of the biggest transfer battles in English football this summer, with Newcastle now also potentially in the race if the midfielder makes the decision to move on from Chelsea.
Jones said on Newcastle’s stance with Mount: “At the moment, I’m told it’s really just a watching brief because they’re not genuinely expecting Mason Mount to become available on the market. I think it would be a big surprise if he genuinely was for sale. But if he is, then Newcastle absolutely want to be in that conversation.”

Indeed, whilst Mount’s form hasn’t been too impressive this season for Chelsea, many would agree that the midfielder could flourish if he makes the decision this summer to sign for another team, with Newcastle perfectly suited for the England international.
The Magpies are keen to add a creative outlet in the summer who can also help with the goalscoring side of the squad, and whilst Mount’s record this campaign only amounts to three goals and two assists in all competitions, the Portsmouth-born talent has shown what he is capable of in the past.
Newcastle signing Mount could be a masterstroke from PIF

After three windows of careful spending from PIF, Newcastle’s owners look primed to go big in the summer on new signings, and Mount could be a masterstroke of a deal if the Chelsea man makes himself available at the end of this season.
Eddie Howe has proven to be a great coach in getting the best out of players once deemed unproven for the Premier League, such as Miguel Almiron and Joelinton, and the English coach could be the man to bring the spark back into Mount that has been lacking for quite some time now.
