Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing LOSC Lille talent Lucas Chevalier, who this season has established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Magpies, alongside Fulham, are keeping tabs on the French wonderkid following a breakout season in Ligue 1 with Lille, with the 21-year-old making 20 appearances for Les Dogues, conceding just 16 goals and keeping seven clean sheets.

Lauded by Ligue 2’s official website as a ‘remarkable’ talent, Chevalier signed a long-term contract with Lille in January that will keep the goalkeeper at Lille until 2027. However, a summer move to the Premier League could now be on the cards with Newcastle and Fulham now interested.

Whilst both English sides have top starting goalkeepers in Nick Pope and Bernd Leno respectively, Chevalier could be an outstanding long-term option for the likes of Newcastle or Fulham, who according to the report, Eddie Howe’s side could have the edge in signing in the summer.

Indeed, whilst Pope is only 30-years-old and is currently in the form of his life, there’s every chance that the England international could one day be succeeded by Chevalier should Newcastle move to sign the Lille superstar in the summer transfer window.

At 21, Chevalier has exploded onto the scene in a big way for Lille, and with interest now mounting for the future French international, there’s every chance that Newcastle could be the side who wins the race to bring the young goalkeeper to England.

Newcastle have been lauded for their transfer business since the PIF takeover in 2021, with Howe’s team making good moves for both the present and the future, and Chevalier fits this model to a tee, with the French goalkeeper an ideal long-term replacement for Pope.

Whilst it might take some years before the 21-year-old is ready to take the starting position, having such an option and talent waiting in the wings and learning under Pope will be huge for Newcastle, with Chevalier also potentially eager himself to make the move to the Premier League to one day become a starter.
