Newcastle are reportedly one of the early favourites to sign Denzel Dumfries this summer, with Tottenham also chasing the Inter Milan right-back in recent weeks.

According to La Repubblica, the Magpies are ‘best placed’ out of the Premier League sides pursuing the Netherlands international, with Eddie Howe keen to add right-sided depth to his Newcastle side ahead of their potential return to European football.

As per the report, Chelsea could also challenge Newcastle for Dumfries, though according to CalcioMercatoWeb, Tottenham are also interested in signing the defender, with Antonio Conte a huge fan of the former PSV Eindhoven superstar.

Spurs were heavily linked with a move for Dumfries in January before securing a deal to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon, yet given Conte’s nature in the transfer market, there’s a good chance that the Italian manager will look to bring in his former Inter star amid interest from Newcastle.

Indeed, with an asking price of €60m (£52m) as reported by Inter Live, Dumfries would be quite the signing for any Premier League club this summer, and given how explosive the 26-year-old can be when in the right system, Newcastle might want to push hard to sign the Tottenham target.

Moreover, with the right-back a great long-term replacement for Kieran Trippier, there’s an extra incentive from Newcastle to go all out and sign Dumfries ahead of their north London Premier League rivals, with the Dutchman too good an option to pass up on.

Dumfries has been one of the best fullbacks in Europe for some time, and with Inter looking to sell the defender this summer, Newcastle have to ensure they’re at the front of the queue for the Dutch international, especially if the Nerazzurri can lower their asking price.

At £52m, Newcastle can sign a player who will transform their club to something quite special, and although Dumfries would add a lot of value to the squad, Howe is wise enough to know that he will only move for the right-back if Inter drop their demands.
