Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are reportedly set to miss out on the signing of Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes to Julen Lopetegui’s Wolverhampton Wanderers in the January transfer window.
Italian journalist Rudy Galetti reported last week that Newcastle want to sign Gomes from Flamengo this month.
We covered the report here on HITC Sport.
However, it seems that the Magpies are set to suffer disappointment in their quest to bring the 21-year-old Brazilian to St. James’ Park.
Well-known and well-respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported on Twitter that Wolves are now set to sign Gomes from Flamengo.
The Wanderers will reportedly pay a transfer fee of €17 million (£15 million) for the youngster, who has agreed personal terms with Wolves and will sign a five-year contract.
Wolves to sign Newcastle target Joao Gomes

Interesting
We find it interesting that Joao Gomes is going to join Wolverhampton Wanderers and not Newcastle United.
Yes, Wolves are a big and established club in the Premier League, but there is a very distinct possibility that they could get relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
Newcastle are going places under Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and could end up in the Premier League top four this season.
And the Magpies have a young and dynamic team, and Gomes would have fit in nicely at the club.
