Inter Milan are reportedly interested in signing Leicester City defender Timothy Castagne as a replacement for Denzel Dumfries, with Newcastle United interested in the Dutch international.

According to Inter Live, the Premier League fullback has been identified by the Serie A giants as an option to replace Dumfries should the defender leave Inter in the summer, with the former PSV Eindhoven star heavily linked with a move away from the San Siro over the January transfer window.

Numerous Premier League clubs have been linked with Dumfries, with Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that Newcastle are one of the sides most interested in the 25-year-old, who according to Fabrizio Romano could leave Inter for as little as €40m (£34m) this summer.

With Inter now eyeing Castagne as a target for the off-season, there could be a motivation from the Nerazzurri to sell Dumfries in order to bring in the Leicester star as soon as possible, with the defender likely open on a return to Italy having had a mixed spell at the King Power Stadium.

Indeed, Newcastle receiving help from a Premier League rival in Leicester and Castagne would be an interesting twist in the Magpies’ pursuit to sign Dumfries, who could now be a very realistic target for Eddie Howe with Inter putting plans into motion to bring the Foxes’ Belgian international to Milan.

Whilst a move for Dumfries might have to happen first for Castagne to head to Inter, the fact the Nerazzurri already have a player in mind to replace the Dutch international is an encouraging sign for Newcastle, who could significantly bolster their defensive ranks in the summer.

Newcastle might have one of the best right-backs in the Premier League on their books in Kieran Trippier, but with Inter interested in Castagne and the Magpies eyeing Dumfries, the summer is as perfect a time as any to move in for the Dutchman, who could be an exceptional signing.

The fullback has shown for both club and country to be a dangerous option in both defence and in attack. And for Newcastle, Inter planning a move for Castagne is a big hint that Dumfries could be allowed to leave in the summer transfer window.
