Newcastle United are interested in a transfer for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay. But Toon manager Eddie Howe does not see him as a guaranteed starter.
That is according to Dean Jones, who reports that Newcastle are targeting a transfer from Manchester United for McTominay. But Howe only wants the midfielder as he can give the Magpies a ‘really effective’ option as a squad player while they seek to bulk out their team.
Newcastle are determined to use the next transfer window to round out their squad with a European tour now likely. The St James’ Park natives accept they must back Howe to sign a few players who can see the club compete in the Premier League and a UEFA tournament.

Newcastle are in widespread agreement over a transfer for Scott McTominay
McTominay’s name is on Newcastle’s shopping list with Howe open to strengthening their midfield as part of any off-season spending. But the 26-year-old moving to Tyneside would only be to improve their depth. Howe will not guarantee the Scotland star a starting role.
Raiding Manchester United for the transfer of McTominay has widespread support among the Newcastle hierarchy, though. The Telegraph reported in March 2023 that the Magpies’ sporting director, Dan Ashworth, chief scout, Steve Nickson, and Howe agree on the move.
The Telegraph also claimed that McTominay is open to a transfer to Newcastle as their rise to European contention under Howe has impressed the Manchester United product. But a report by ESPN in March 2023 noted that the Red Devils would demand in excess of £40m.

Manchester United risk pricing Eddie Howe out of the market for the midfielder
Manchester United’s price tag is more than Newcastle are willing to pay to strike a transfer for McTominay. Although 90min also reported in March 2023 that Old Trafford chiefs may accept £25-30m. Yet it adds the Toon would face competition from West Ham United, too.
The Red Devils do not need to accept low-ball offers for the 38-cap Scotland international. His contract at Old Trafford runs until June 2025 and features an optional further year. But Erik ten Hag has only started the Lancaster-born technician in nine league games this term.
