Journalist Alex Crook has reported on talkSPORT (11:44am, January 27, 2023) that Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are now just £5 million away from signing Anthony Gordon from Everton in the final days of the January transfer window.

Crook has claimed today that if Newcastle are willing to pay an extra £5 million more to what they have already offered to Premier League rivals Everton, then they would be able to bring Gordon to St. James’ Park.

However, according to the journalist, neither Newcastle nor Everton are willing to budge from their position at the moment.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported on Twitter that Gordon, 21, has already agreed personal terms with the Magpies and is keen on a move to St. James’ Park.

Update on Newcastle chase for Everton winger Anthony Gordon

Crook said: “I have just had a message saying that at the moment the two clubs, Newcastle and Everton, £5 million apart in terms of fees. That doesn’t seem insurmountable, although the message does go on to say neither party budging at this stage.”

What should Newcastle do?

If Newcastle United are really determined to sign Anthony Gordon, then they should just pay the extra £5 million that Everton are looking for.

Just pay it and get the deal done now.

Now, of course, no club want to pay more than they have to, but there is no point in the Magpies haggling over £5 million.

After all, Newcastle have the richest owners in club football in Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

We think that Newcastle should get a deal done now and bring Gordon to St. James’ Park as soon as possible so that manager Eddie Howe can start working with him.
