CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs has told Caught Offside that Newcastle United are considering a surprise move to lure Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies to Tyneside ahead of the summer window – with Dan Ashworth very keen.
Davies, 22, is a mainstay in a Bayern side that are competing to win the Bundesliga, and the Champions League. He is considered one of the best left-backs in the world – able to also play as a wing back, of further forward as a winger.
For Canada, at the World Cup, Davies was given a completely free role as an attacking midfielder or striker. It shows just how good he is, how versatile. He has clocked up 141 games for Bayern since joining the club in January 2019.
AS rate him at a fee of £64million, but the chances are that Bayern would want a much bigger fee to part with their Ghana-born ace. However, Jacobs says Ashworth is very interested in completing a stunning move to sign Davies.
Newcastle would prefer a left-back. Eddie Howe values a young, speedy, dynamic player in that area. The modern full-back can be confused as a winger. Alphonso Davies has peaked Dan Ashworth’s interest,” Jacobs told Caught Offside.

What a signing Davies would be. Davies is the kind of player that instantly improves pretty much, any club in the world. Even Manchester City would love to sign a player like Davies, with Nathan Ake used on the left side of the defence.
Newcastle are in with a chance of finishing in the top four. If they are to strike a deal for Davies, Champions League football is key. Can they really tempt Davies to leave Bayern for the Toon? It would be a shock, but they have the cash.
