Newcastle have had a £12.7million bid rejected for Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen.
The Northern Echo claim Newcastle United have had a bid rejected of £12.7million for Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen, with the Dutch outfit wanting a fee closer to almost £22million.
The 27-year-old has emerged as a target for the Toon after scoring nine goals in 19 league and cup outings for the Dutch giants, as Rafa Benitez looks to bring a striker to the club before the end of the January transfer window.
It is unclear how much Newcastle boss Benitez has been given to spend on January targets, but with owner Mike Ashley keeping a tight hold on the Toon coffers, splashing out almost double on Jorgensen to meet Feyenoord’s demands seems unlikely.
That should see Benitez forget about landing the 28-time Denmark international, unless he can find another way in which to tempt Feyenoord into selling their attacking spearhead.
The Toon are reportedly willing to listen to offers for Serbia international Aleksander Mitrovic, with Sky Sports reporting that the Tyneside club have rejected an £8million bid from West Bromwich Albion for the striker.
Would it make sense, then, for Newcastle to include Mitrovic in a deal to sign Jorgensen with the former Anderlecht striker seemingly surplus to requirements at St. James’ Park?
Mitrovic, 23, has failed to make a single start for the Toon in the Premier League this season, with Joselu and Dwight Gayle preferred up front to the powerful attacker.
Including Mitrovic in a deal to sign Jorgensen would preserve funds for Benitez to spend elsewhere on a squad that is in desperate need of reinforcements. A goalkeeper, winger and attacking midfielder are also required.
A player-plus-cash deal would kill two birds with one stone, in a deal that would surely suit all parties as Feyenoord would be handed an instant replacement more than capable of scoring in the Dutch Eredivisie.
