Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy believes Liverpool, Newcastle United and maybe even Arsenal will make a push for Mason Mount if the England international leaves Chelsea this summer, speaking to talkSPORT (15 March, 12.40pm).
Mount has always been a player under-appreciated by the masses. From accusations of being something of a ‘pet’ to Frank Lampard’s ‘teacher’, from being pitted against Jack Grealish for a spot in the England squad, Mount is now being forced to shoulder much of the blame for Chelsea’s recent malaise under Graham Potter.
Now, criticism of his form is understandable. He, like so many at Stamford Bridge, have fallen well short of their usual standards of late.

But, as Murphy points out, this is a 24-year-old Champions League winner we are talking about. A man who claimed Chelsea’s Player of the Year award in each of the last two seasons. With nearly 40 England caps.
A man who, with his contract expiring in 15 months’ time, may be available for a fraction of his market value.
Liverpool and Newcastle like Chelsea’s Mason Mount
“I’d definitely want to keep him because I know what I’m getting. I am getting 100 per cent commitment from a player who loves the club. Who’s got great technical ability, and who can play in multiple positions,” Murphy says.
“I think he is a super talent and a really good character. I’m on board with him. I love everything about him.”
Mount, who scored 13 goals and set up 16 more during a formidable 2021/22 campaign, is reportedly asking for around £240,000-a-week at Chelsea. A three-fold increase on his current wages of £80,000-a-week.
Newcastle and Manchester City are among those watching his situation closely, per 90Min, though it is Liverpool who appear to be at the front of the queue (Daily Mail). Jurgen Klopp is crying out for some extra youth and energy in the middle of the park and Mount would come far cheaper, given his contract situation, than the likes of Jude Bellingham.
“I would be desperately trying to get him at my club if I was Liverpool,” adds former Anfield playmaker Murphy.
“They will all be in for him. They will all try and get him. Newcastle, Liverpool, United will go in for him. It wouldn’t surprise me if Arsenal were in for him. Why wouldn’t you want him?”
