Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez has recounted his disappointment over failing to sign for Chelsea last summer amid recent transfer links to Premier League rivals Newcastle United.
Speaking to De Telegraaf, the Mexican international revealed that he was proud to have back from the grief of missing out on a late move to England, with Ajax setting a €50m (£43m) asking price for Alvarez as the defensive unit looks set to leave Amsterdam this year.
Alvarez said about his failed move to Chelsea last year: “I grieved for one day and then showed that I am a strong person. Of course, the disappointment lasted for a while, but I believe that everything happens for a reason. Maybe it wasn’t the right time yet. My time will come, 100%.”
With journalist Dean Jones reporting that Newcastle are now interested in the 25-year-old, Alvarez looks likely to move to England amid growing Premier League interest in the Ajax star, though there is a good chance that Chelsea could reignite their interest.

Indeed, Alvarez has impressed with Ajax this season and is set to play a big role for the European giants in the UEFA Europa League against Union Berlin, and for the likes of Chelsea and Newcastle, the midfielder can make a statement with a big showing in Europe.
Moreover, with the Mexican now coming out and saying his time will soon come, Alvarez himself now looks more eager than ready to prove to a big Premier League that he is worth the money this summer, something Chelsea and Newcastle could both be willing to spend for the Ajax star.
Chelsea and Newcastle could go head-to-head for Alvarez this summer

Alvarez looked set for a dramatic move to Chelsea last summer on deadline day. However, having already lost three key players already, Ajax blocked any move for the Mexican international. However, this year is already shaping up to be quite a different one for the Dutch side, and Chelsea or Newcastle could be big winners.
Both Premier League sides seem keen to land the midfielder this summer, and with Alvarez teasing that he could soon make the move from Ajax, Chelsea and Newcastle could go head-to-head to sign the 25-year-old in the coming months.
