Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is reportedly eager to return to Napoli despite rumours that Newcastle United are interested in signing the Italian international in 2023.

According to La Repubblica, Jorginho is dreaming of signing for his former Serie A side as the midfielder looks set to leave Chelsea as a free agent at the end of this season, with Sky Italia recently reporting that Newcastle are in the race to land the 31-year-old.

One of Chelsea’s most accomplished players in recent years, Jorginho heading to St. James Park would be quite the coup for Eddie Howe’s side, yet a return to Napoli makes a lot of sense on paper for the Euro 2020 winner, especially if the Serie A leaders are able to clinch the Scudetto.

Napoli are the clear favourites to take the Italian title away from Milan, and such an achievement could secure Jorginho’s future even with Newcastle interested in signing the Chelsea midfielder, who is seemingly set on returning to Naples in 2023.

Indeed, Jorginho established himself as one of Europe’s best midfielders at Napoli under Maurizio Sarri, who was the manager who brought the Italian to England with Chelsea. And a return to Serie A would be a poetic end to the 31-year-old’s time with Chelsea.

As for Newcastle, missing out on Jorginho would hardly be the worst thing to happen, especially given how dynamic Howe has got the Magpies playing and how different the Italian international is compared to the players the Toon are currently linked with.

Jorginho’s time at Chelsea has been unusual. Whilst the midfielder has on paper been a success with the Italian winning the UEFA Champions League in 2020, many supporters are happy to see the 31-year-old leave next summer, and a return to Napoli would make more sense than signing for Newcastle.

After all, Serie A is the domain where Jorginho thrived and made a name for himself, and with Napoli on the rise, signing for the Neapolitan side would be an ideal move for all parties and one that will force Newcastle find a more suitable midfield target in 2023.
