Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has sent a touching message to Tottenham star Harry Kane after the Spurs striker became his side’s all-time top goalscorer with the only goal in a win over League champions Manchester City.

Kane, 29, finished calmly after a mistake from the Manchester City defence after good work from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Enough to secure a crucial three points for Spurs, who have now won three games in a row – ahead of facing Leicester.

The goal was not only the England skipper’s 200th Premier League goal – becoming only the third player to reach that mark. Kane has overtaken Jimmy Greaves’ record of 266 goals for Spurs. Kane is now just eight behind Wayne Rooney.

Not only that, but the striker has reached 200 League goals in two less games than Shearer did. He is on course to go beyond that record. Trippier, a former Spurs teammate, and an England colleague, heaped praise on Spurs man Kane.

On Instagram, Trippier said: “Congrats Harry Kane. A massive achievement on breaking the record. Been a pleasure to play with you over the years, and I’m sure there are many more goals to come. Hopefully not against my team.”

It is a stunning record. For Kane to overtake Greaves, a legend at Spurs for obvious reasons, is breathtaking. Not least, because Kane has done it before he has even turned 30. Can he overtake Shearer? It looks more than likely he will.

But, it depends on whether he will continue in the Premier League. His comments having overtaken the record suggest he only has eyes on remaining in England. Will that be at Spurs? Potentially, but Manchester United need a striker.

Chelsea, too. Though a move across London to the Blues seems unlikely. Manchester City have Erling Haaland, while Liverpool look as though they will struggle to finish in the top four. Spurs is his home and right now, he is likely to stay.
