Euro 2016 host nation France secured top spot in Group A despite being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Switzerland on Sunday night.
Les Bleus, who kept Olivier Giroud and Dimitri Payet out of the first XI in preparation for the knockout rounds, were unable to break down Vladimir Petkovic’s side.
But it was still a steady performance from France, and Newcastle United star Moussa Sissoko, who impressed on his return to the starting lineup, said he saw some “beautiful things” despite the stalemate – and despite a tricky playing surface.
“I saw beautiful things. But we could not take too many risks with the state of the ground,” he said via The Mail. “It was difficult to play, especially with balls out the back. We tried to do the best we could.”
Once the competition finishes for France, Sissoko must make a decision on his future at club level.
The talented Newcastle winger was relegated to the Championship with the Magpies last season and it remains to be seen whether he will stay with them.
The 26-year-old has this month talked up a move to Arsenal after declaring his love for the Gunners (The Telegraph), but there is little to no speculation suggesting that the feeling is mutual from North London.
