Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has reacted on Instagram after Wolves completed the signing of striker Diego Costa after the Spaniard became a free agent – with the duo once teammates at La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
Costa, 33, is back in the Premier League after leaving Chelsea in January 2018 to join Atletico Madrid. He has been a free agent since January, after leaving Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro, where he managed just five goals in 19 outings.
But with the window ending, Wolves needed a striker. An injury to new man Sasa Kalajdzic, who picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury, forced them to move. It had left Wolves with only struggling Raul Jimenez as an option up top.
However, they have delved into the free agent market and brought 24-time Spain international Costa back to England. Trippier, who spent the entirety of his Atleti spell with Costa, took to Instagram to react to Costa’s move to Wolves.
The Newcastle defender sent Costa a touching message on his Instagram story, posting an eight-word message to his followers, alongside a picture of new signing Costa in a Wolves shirt: “Welcome back to the Premier League my friend.”

Is it a good signing? Costa is obviously a player that has produced incredible moments in the Premier League. He has two Premier League titles to his name. But is he now past it? Can he replicate the form he produced for Chelsea?
His spell in Brazil suggests he will struggle. Costa has suffered from numerous muscle injuries as he grows into his thirties. But Wolves desperately needed a striker. It is certainly a coup for the Midlands club to get such a big name.
Costa could make his debut against Manchester City this weekend, if the game goes ahead. A reunion between Trippier and Costa might occur in the reverse fixture of Wolves and Newcastle, in March on Tyneside.
