Are these Arsenal, Newcastle and Watford midfielders better alternatives to Tottenham’s Harry Winks for England than West Brom’s Jake Livermore?

With Harry Winks having been withdrawn from the England squad to face Germany and Brazil the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has been replaced by West Bromwich Albion’s Jake Livermore.

Livermore has been playing in a struggling Baggies midfield and there are arguably three players more worthy of a call-up by Gareth Southgate and are also more in the mould of Winks.

Tom Cleverley

Being fresh on the back of missing a last minute penalty for Watford to equalise against Everton in the Premier League is perhaps not the best way to get back on the international stage.

However, under Hornets manager Marco Silva, Cleverley has flourished and while arguably nothing more than a solid performer, that is more than can be said for Livermore currently.

Jonjo Shelvey

The debate that really divides Three Lions and even Newcastle United fans is whether Shelvey should be back in the squad.

Those against say his temperament lets him down, but those for rightly point out that there are few better English central midfielders currently with the impressive passing range of the 25-year-old.

Jack Wilshere

Arsenal and Tottenham supporter had a bit of argy-bargy on social media when Winks was selected by Southgate ahead of Wilshere, but when the latter is yet to start a league match this season that was little surprise.

However, the 25-year-old has done well in the Europa League and while is not ahead of his counterpart in the white half of North London at the moment, is a better replacement for him than Livermore.
