Whoever is handed the reigns at Newcastle United after Rafa Benitez’s exit will have a very big job on their hands.

It will not be a quick fix at St James’ Park, that’s for sure.

One area that is in urgent need of attention, however, is the central midfield department, with more quality and guile needed.

And with this in mind, Newcastle should consider a move for Southampton ace Mario Lemina, with the Telegraph suggesting the he could be sold this summer.

The 25-year-old joined the Saints in the summer of 2017, for a fee believed to be worth £18 million according to BBC Sport, but he has really struggled to establish himself on the south coast.

That isn’t to say that he doesn’t still have what it takes to make it in the Premier League, however.

The Gabon international possesses exceptional technical ability, and his composure in possession would undoubtedly help Newcastle play with more authority through the middle of the park.

Lemina is vastly experienced in playing at the very highest level, and he would bring a certain kind of flair and guile to the Magpies’ engine room.

Quite how much Southampton would expect for the midfielder’s signature is unclear, but Newcastle should test the south coast outfit’s resolve nonetheless.

The Gabonese ace is at an age where he will surely only get better, and he could be a real star on Tyneside.
