Newcastle United are reportedly considering freeing up one of their loan spots in January.

It has recently been reported by The Northern Echo that Newcastle are considering a permanent move for Salomon Rondon during the January transfer window.

Rondon has quickly become a popular figure amongst the Toon Army. And a deal could prove advantageous as it will allow Rafa Benitez to target another player on loan. Of course, the negative aspect of a deal for Rondon is that he would have used up a significant portion of his budget on a player already at the club.

But should that be the route that Newcastle end up going down, then perhaps the Magpies should consider joining the race to sign Liverpool ace Nathaniel Clyne until the summer.

The Sun recently suggested that Clyne is likely to be available on a temporary basis next month, with a host of Premier League sides already eyeing up a potential deal.

Although Clyne – who cost £12.5 million, according to The Sun – has struggled in recent times at Anfield, he is a player who has appeared more than 160 times at the highest level. And at 27, he has the time to get his career back on track.

At the weekend, DeAndre Yedlin was given a torrid time. There are certainly more pressing concerns in other areas, but strengthening the options at right-back would arguably be a smart move ahead of what looks set to be a crucial few months at St James’ Park.

And given Newcastle’s stature, Clyne should jump at the chance to make a move if Benitez considers a bid. If his Liverpool career is over, then it may provide the perfect platform to put the right-back in the shop window ahead of the summer.
