Newcastle United should perhaps consider a move for West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans this summer.
Relegation would activate a clause in Evans’ contract that would allow him to leave on the cheap, and the Mirror suggests that West Ham United, Leicester City and Everton are all keeping the 30-year-old on their radar.
And if Rafa Benitez manages to keep his side in the top flight this season, Newcastle should arguably join the list of clubs interested in signing Evans in the summer if he is available for the bargain fee.
The Magpies have some decent defensive options, but they are not good enough at the back to pass up the opportunity to sign a player with Evans’ experience and quality for just £3 million – and their need for greater depth at the back could increase given recent reports surrounding Jamaal Lascelles.
The Chronicle recently reported that Everton, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal are all keen on Lascelles. And while Newcastle are in a strong position in regards to his contract, they perhaps need to prepare themselves in case an eye-watering bid that they simply cannot turn down comes in.
If Benitez is working with a limited budget once again in the summer, joining the race to sign Evans for £3 million is surely a must as that bargain deal will not significantly hurt the Magpies’ budget and would see the club land a very good defender seemingly with a few more years playing at a decent level left in him.
