The former Juventus and Southampton star would be a useful addition to the Newcastle United squad.
Magpies boss Rafa Benitez is still yet to make a real splash in the transfer market this summer, and with less than one month remaining until the new Premier League campaign kicks off, the Spaniard will surely be ramping up his efforts to bring in suitable acquisitions.
Whilst attacking reinforcements will arguably be Benitez’ priority, the addition of another established centre-back will also be of paramount importance to their chances of enjoying a successful campaign in the top flight this term.
With this in mind, Newcastle should consider moving for Martin Caceres, who is available on a free transfer following his release from Southampton.

The 30-year-old barely featured for the Saints last term, but still has a lot to offer at the very highest level, and his availability on a free transfer means that the Toon could then set aside their remaining transfer budget on signing a winger and a striker.
The former Juventus man possesses a footballing CV that can be matched by few in the game, with five Serie A titles, two Coppa Italias, a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey and a Champions League winner’s medal to his name.
He has also earned 70 international caps for Uruguay.
The seasoned centre-back has a wealth of experience under his belt, and his defensive know-how could prove to be crucial to the Magpies, what with the authority he would bring to their back-line.
Caceres is tenacious in the tackle, and his aggressive style of play is perfectly suited to the robust nature of the English game.
And whilst he would probably not play week in, week out for Benitez’ side, he would undoubtedly be a useful member of the squad at St James’ Park, both on and off the pitch.
