Rafa Benitez’s transfer priorities will be to bring a striker, a central midfielder and a centre-back to Newcastle United this summer, if owner Mike Ashley finally backs the Spanish boss.

But looking at the Toon’s starting XI, Benitez should consider bring a new left-back to St. James’ Park with Paul Dummett unrivalled as the club’s first choice left-sided defender.

Indeed, the Wales international was solid and dependable during the Toon’s promotion-winning campaign, and became even more vital during the 2017-18 as Newcastle defied the odds to finish in 10th.

But Dummett, a Newcastle academy product, needs competition at left back, and Benitez should seriously consider bringing in a better left-sided defender to improve his squad and give himself more options.

Benitez has been linked with plenty of moves for Bundesliga players since taking over at Newcastle, and has signed Mikel Merino from Borussia Dortmund. Now, he should raid Dortmund for a second time.

German magazine Bild claim Huddersfield Town are interested in signing Dortmund left-back Erik Durm, but the 26-year-old would surely be an excellent addition on Tyneside.

Durm, a seven-time Germany international, could be set to leave Lucien Favre’s side this summer, with only a year remaining on his current deal.

Landing Durm for a bargain fee, which could happen as Dortmund will not want him to leave on a free next summer, would be an excellent addition by Benitez.
