Burnley striker Ashley Barnes is reportedly a target for Chelsea this month as he continues to impress in the claret and blue of Premier League side Burnley, but would he not be perfect for Newcastle?
Goal claim Chelsea have added the 28-year-old to their shortlist as they continue their search for a striker to act as back-up to Alvaro Morata. Andy Carroll, Peter Crouch and Edin Dzeko have all been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge.
A formal approach is yet to be made by Chelsea, but they are interested in signing the former Brighton and Plymouth attacker, who has impressed under Sean Dyche this season.
Barnes has scored four goals in his 26 league and cup outings, but he is not known for his ability to find the back of the net. Instead, it is his tireless work rate and creativity in the final third that sees him remain a Burnley regular.
Burnley’s number 10 is also able to offer interested parties versatility, as he is able to play up front, as well as the number 10 role and out wide. With huge Premier League experience, would he not be crucial at St. James’ Park?
Newcastle could prove a better deal for Barnes, with first-team football likely to be guaranteed by Benitez if the Spaniard does indeed look to beat his former side to the Burnley forward’s signature.
The Toon are widely reported as willing to sell Aleksander Mitrovic, while Joselu has not performed to the adequate standard since his summer move from Stoke. Barnes will not get Newcastle the goals, but he will offer something else.
His work rate will see Newcastle defend from the front much better, helping the Toon remain solid going into the second half of the season. His aggression and fiery determination will also lift the fans, another huge weapon in Newcastle’s armoury.
With just 18 months on his contract at Turf Moor, Barnes could easily be moved on by Burnley and Newcastle should be at the head of the queue.
