Newcastle should revive 2016 interest in Leeds’ Ronaldo Vieira

Newcastle United were reportedly scouting Ronaldo Vieira in 2016, and the Magpies should now go back in for the Leeds United midfielder.

In reports that may have left many Leeds fans concerned, The Sun on Sunday (15/07; page 59) suggested over the weekend that the Whites should brace themselves for an £8 million bid for Ronaldo Vieira from Cardiff City.

It is not clear what Leeds’ asking price would be for the 19-year-old, but The Sun on Sunday suggested that the Championship side could sell Vieira who has made more than 60 league appearances for the club since making his debut on the final day of the 2015/16 campaign.

Vieira may not have been at his best last season, but there is an enormous amount of potential there and if Leeds are going to consider selling then Newcastle must get involved as Rafa Benitez seemingly looks for bargains in the market.

The Chronicle reported in November 2016 that Newcastle were scouting the holding midfielder, and if he is available for anything like £8 million then the Magpies simply have to make a move.

The Premier League side have already strengthened their options in the middle of the park with Ki Sung-yueng, but with Mikel Merino departing, Benitez should not close the door completely on adding further to his ranks.

Vieira appears to be destined to play at the highest level. Some of his best performances for Leeds have come when they have come up against some fantastic midfields, so he certainly has the ability to raise his game to thrive at England’s top table.

It is perhaps a gamble to consider a move after he endured a slightly more underwhelming campaign, but if Cardiff sense that they may have some luck with an £8 million bid, then Newcastle should do all they can to jump the queue as he could prove to be an absolute steal at that price.

And with Benitez proving to have the Midas touch when it comes to elevating players and helping them realise their potential, there is every reason to believe that if Newcastle joined the race and managed to sign Vieira, it could turn out to be a masterstroke of a deal.
