The crystal Palace hitman would be a superb signing for Newcastle United.

The Magpies have made a worrying start to life in the Premier League, using their opening two games, and Rafa Benitez has a lot of work to do before the transfer window slams shut, if he is to guide his side to a successful campaign in the top flight.

One area where the Spaniard undoubtedly wants to improve is his forward department, with his side becoming too over-reliant on Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrović not featuring at all in the Newcastle boss’ plans, according to the Sun.

And with this in mind, Benitez should make a bold move for Eagles hitman Christian Benteke, and offer the 22-year-old Serbian in return to help sweeten the deal.

The 26-year-old moved to Palace in the summer of 2016, for a fee that could eventually rise to £32 million, and went on to impress for the south London outfit, scoring 15 goals in 38 Premier League outings to date.

The Belgium international would be the ideal signing for Newcastle, and has all of the attributes needed to either lead the line on his own for the Toon, or play as part of a two-pronged attack alongside Gayle.

Benteke is powerful in the air, quick along the ground, and is no slouch in front of goal. He could act as the perfect focal point for all of the Magpies’ attacks, and his ability to hold the ball up would offer their defenders a great outlet when they are under pressure.

Whilst Palace will surely be reluctant to sell the former Liverpool and Aston Villa man, the opportunity to take Mitrovic in return as part of the deal might just be enough to tempt them into doing business.

And if Benitez does manage to bring Benteke to St James’ Park, it could turn out to be the signing that turns Newcastle’s season around.
