Newcastle United do not need the winger as they prepare for life back in the top flight.
According to a recent report from ESPN, Newcastle United have just a week after the end of the season to activate their £6.5million option for loanee Christian Atsu, but Magpies manager Rafa Benitez would be wise to keep his money in his pocket.
Atsu made St. James’ Park his latest temporary home at the start of the current campaign. However a return of four goals and three assists in 33 outings has not exactly set pulses racing.
In short, Atsu is not good enough for a Newcastle side now preparing for their Premier League return, and Benitez would be sensible to spend that £6.5million elsewhere.
Wingers are notoriously hit-and-miss performers yet Atsu is far more miss than hit and even if he has scored one and assisted another in his last two outings, it is too little too late.
Newcastle have plenty of options in their senior side and exciting youngsters coming through the ranks, and if Atsu cannot cut it in the second tier what hope does he have of making a belated name for himself in the top flight?
A loan move was risk-free, but now Newcastle have seen what the Ghana international can do they should let the deadline pass and focus their attention elsewhere, leaving Chelsea to deal with a player who may never be good enough for them.
