The Leicester City player is exactly the kind of midfielder Newcastle United need next season.

Leicester City's Nampalys Mendy in action with Arsenal's Granit Xhaka

When Leicester City signed Nampalys Mendy from AS Monaco last summer he was hailed as the replacement for the Chelsea-bound N’Golo Kante, but an injury soon after means he has hardly been seen this season.

Now full recovered but lacking match fitness, the 24-year-old defensive midfielder does not appear to be fancied by current Foxes boss Craig Shakespeare, but that does not mean his Premier League journey has to be over.

Newcastle United are in desperate need of quality reinforcements in midfield if, as expected, they return to the top flight this summer.

Jack Colback may be playing week in, week out for the Magpies in the second tier but he is not good enough and an in-form Mendy would certainly be an upgrade.

It would be easy to look at the Frenchman’s struggles at Leicester and brand him a flop, but he is one of the most talented holding midfielders in the game and he just needs a manager to show faith in him.

Mendy and Ibrahimovic

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez could be that man, coaxing the best out of a player who was tipped as the next big thing during an impressive run at Monaco and later Nice.

The fact that Newcastle could potentially get the Leicester man on the cheap will surely also be an enticing prospect, if the Foxes really have given up on their summer signing so soon.
