Newcastle United fans should be worried about Tottenham’s decision to shelve interest in Mattijs de Ligt.

Newcastle United fans could afford to laugh off interest from West Ham in defender Jamaal Lascelles earlier this summer.

Reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur is another matter entirely.

The Evening Standard yesterday reported how Lascelles is high on Tottenham’s radar, and after a reported decision from the club last night puts even more pressure on Newcastle.

Football London report Spurs have had a U-turn over Ajax defender Mattijs De Ligt, and they will not be pursuing the Netherlands defender any longer.

So if not De Ligt, then who? Lascelles is the first name mentioned in the report, and Newcastle fans are right to be worried.

Lascelles was a controversial omission from England’s World Cup squad, and this could enable Tottenham to snap him up a lot more quickly than had he been on the plane to Russia.

The former Nottingham Forest talent is proven in the Premier League, and has established himself as a leader, captaining Newcastle.

His World Cup snub could even persuade Lascelles that he may need to move to get the international recognition he deserves.

Playing Champions League football for Tottenham would seal his case.
