Newcastle United are set to hire former Brighton and Hove Albion technical director Dan Ashworth after the official resigned from the Seagulls earlier this morning.
According to the Athletic, the Magpies are expected to appoint the 50-year-old as their new head of transfers following today’s bombshell story from Brighton. Ashworth is highly-regarded in English football following his work with the Premier League side and the FA.
Brighton have remained stable success in the Premier League since Ashworth’s appointment which has seen the south coast side bring some exceptional talents to the English top-flight, such as Yves Bissouma, Alexis Mac Allister and Marc Cucurella.
As per the Athletic last month, Ashworth held talks about a potential move to Newcastle. And now, following the news from Brighton this morning, the 50-year-old is in the clear to make the move to Eddie Howe’s side.
Indeed, this hire from Newcastle is an exciting one of the Premier League side. The Toon were the most active club in January in the top-flight, signing five players and spending close to £100m in transfer fees.
And with Ashworth now set to join the transfer team, Newcastle could expect some smart signings in the coming transfer windows, with the former Brighton technical director noted for his use of the scouting network in unique parts of the world, such as Poland and Ecuador.
Ashworth appointment most notable Newcastle move since Howe

Ever since PIF’s takeover of Newcastle, world-class appointments have been talked up for Newcastle, and in Ashworth, the Toon have such a figure to lead them into an exciting new era for the club.
The former Brighton transfer chief has an impressive record with the Seagulls. And for a club with the funds like Newcastle now have, Ashworth could make some serious strides in taking the Magpies back to the top of English football.
