The Magpies academy graduate impressed under Rafael Benitez but was ruled out earlier this season with a knee injury.
Newcastle United ace Sean Longstaff has admitted that the upcoming summer will be “tough” as he bids to recover from a heartbreaking knee injury but has vowed to come back stronger and suggests he will seek to be back by pre-season.
The 21-year-old academy graduate burst onto the scene this season under Rafael Benitez, making nine Premier League appearances (Transfermarkt) and impressing the Toon Army faithful with his talent and work rate.
Longstaff initially wasn’t in his manager’s plans at the start of the campaign, but with certain players having been either injured, out of form or otherwise unavailable, it opened the door for him in the first team, which he took with both hands.
However, Longstaff’s season came to a premature end after his knee ligament injury against West Ham United last month, and with him currently recovering, he took the opportunity to travel to Canada to watch Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Brighton with the Toon Army Toronto supporters club.
“You want to get back on the pitch as much as possible,” Longstaff is quoted by the official Newcastle website as saying. “I got a little taste of it, playing for a couple of months, and then it got taken away so quickly, but now I want to try and get back fit as quickly as possible.
“It’s going to be a tough summer – I’ll probably be in most of the summer – but I’m looking forward to it. It’s a new challenge, it’s going to allow me to get bigger and stronger, and hopefully ready for next year. It’ll give me a chance to get back in pre-season and hopefully try and work as hard as I can to be around the team again and see if I can get back playing some games.”
Longstaff visited Canada with his father, David, who played ice hockey for Great Britain and was the first man who win 100 caps, with the pair watching the Toronto Maple Leafs take on the Boston Bruins.
