Newcastle United player Rolando Aarons has appeared to criticise FC Slovan Liberec, the club where he spent the first half of the season on loan, by saying he played up front for them even though he is “definitely not a striker”.
The 23-year-old has found himself surplus to requirements for the Magpies this season as he joined the Czech club on loan in September, returned to St James’ Park in January and was then sent to Sheffield Wednesday late in January, without featuring for his parent club at all this term (Transfermarkt).
While at Slovan, Aarons made 12 appearances but failed to register a single goal or assist, while at Hillsborough he has made three appearances so far, all in the Championship and all off the bench (Transfermarkt).
More positively for the player, he seems to have won over some of the Wednesday faithful, with calls for him to start following his cameo against Rotherham United last time out, as can be seen by some post-match Twitter reaction.
Speaking to the Sheffield Star ahead of this weekend’s league meeting with Swansea, Aarons – who has largely been deployed on the wings by Steve Bruce – feels he is being utilised properly by the Wednesday boss as opposed to at Slovan.
He said: “I’m definitely not a striker! I played up front in the Czech Republic. It was different playing with my back to goal. I learned how to use my body differently and play in different areas in the pitch. I feel I’m stronger on the wings.”
