Newcastle United are being linked with a move for Danny Ings.
Newcastle United’s search for a striker may take them back to Liverpool in January, with Danny Ings believed to be a target for Rafael Benitez.
Despite seeing Dwight Gayle hit 23 goals last season, manager Benitez looked for a new striker over the summer, and landed compatriot Joselu from Stoke City despite his modest goal return.
So far, Joselu has been a hard-working front man who maybe lacks a little extra quality, and with question marks over the futures of Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic, another striker may be wanted in January.
The Northern Echo recently reported that Benitez is interested in signing Liverpool’s Danny Ings, who is working his way back from two major knee injuries, and may need a loan move to kickstart his career in 2018.
If Ings, 25, can recapture the form that saw him score 37 goals in his final two seasons for Burnley, then the pacey forward could be a smart addition for Newcastle – but matters with Liverpool could once again be a problem for the Magpies.
Newcastle wanted to bring in Divock Origi on loan from Liverpool over the summer, but – as reported by The Telegraph – talks broke down after Newcastle couldn’t guarantee Liverpool that Origi would start regularly.
With Ings working his way back to fitness, Liverpool would surely demand similar terms in order to loan him out in January, and it seems more likely that he would be used in rotation with Joselu or coming on from the bench.
If that is the case, then a move for Ings may hit the buffers much like the bid for Origi did, and the Magpies should be wary of that before making their move for the former Bournemouth man in January.
