Schar has already played at Newcastle’s St. James’ Park for Switzerland.

Newcastle United’s newest signing Fabian Schar has posted an anecdote on Instagram from six years ago that saw him turn out at St. James’ Park with Switzerland at the 2012 Olympics.
The Toon have completed the signing of the 42-time Switzerland international, after Rafa Benitez opted to activate the £3million relegation release clause in his Deportivo La Coruna contract.
The 26-year-old centre-back has signed a three-year deal with The Toon, replacing Chancel Mbemba who left Newcastle earlier this week to join Portuguese giants FC Porto.
A fresh-faced 20-year-old, Schar played at St. James’ Park for the Swiss in a 1-1 draw against Gabon, before failing to help his country qualify from Group B. He recalled the moment he walked out at SJP for the first time.
Schar caught the eye of Toon manager Rafa Benitez after impressing at the World Cup, helping the Swiss keep Brazil to just a point against Brazil – in which Schar was immaculate against the likes of Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Willian.
It remains to be seen if the former Basel and Hoffenheim defender will be first choice for Newcastle, with Benitez boasting Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Florian Lejeune.
