Steve Bruce reverted to a back five for Newcastle’s most recent Premier League match, against Tottenham.

It was a blunt Magpies performance but they somehow escaped with a 1-1 draw thanks to Callum Wilson’s stoppage time penalty.

As per the Chronicle, Bruce made a point of stating his aim to make his side a four-at-the-back, two-up-front side during his pre-match press conference.

For that reason, we expect him to go for a 4-4-2 system against a Clarets side who will likely do similar – but who will be in the team?

Karl Darlow got a rest against Newport in midweek but will hope to start here.

Bruce told the press that skipper Jamaal Lascelles has a hamstring niggle, so we’ve not got the 26-year-old in our side.

Jamal Lewis and Javier Manquillo are the most likely full back options in a back four.

Issac Hayden played on the right of the three centre halves at Spurs but should move back into midfield for this one alongside midweek goalscorer Jonjo Shelvey.

Biggest Premier League transfer deadline day deals in 2019

  1. Alex Iwobi

    Arsenal to Everton: £34 million

  2. Ismaila Sarr

    Rennes to Watford: £30 million

  3. Ryan Sessegnon

    Fulham to Tottenham: £25 million

  4. Kieran Tierney

    Celtic to Arsenal: £25 million

  5. Dennis Praet

    Sampdoria to Leicester: £18 million

Jeff Hendrick should play on the right of midfield against his old club, with the flair coming down the left from Allan Saint-Maximin.

Bruce said he hopes the Frenchman will be fit and for an idea of how important that is, look no further than his manager’s comments about the winger back in July.

As per the Guardian, Bruce enthused: “He’s arguably the best pound-for-pound signing in the Premier League. You show me another better. We probably got the buy of the season. He’s blessed with unique skills.”

Wilson is likely to start and we’ve got Andy Carroll up alongside him, although Miguel Almiron could start if Bruce opts for 4-4-1-1.
